What is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy is a client-centred health profession concerned with promoting health and well being through occupation. Paediatric occupational therapists help children develop skills in the areas of self-care, school and play, as these are seen as a child's main areas of occupation. By supporting children and enabling them to achieve their maximum potential, paediatric occupational therapists indirectly work on developing confidence, self esteem, social skills and general well being. For more information visit the Occupational Therapy Australia website.

Assessments

We take a consultative approach throughout the assessment and take into consideration the needs of the family and goals of other professionals involved.

Therapy Sessions

A typical therapy session is between 30 – 60 minutes depending on the child’s goals. Sessions are unique and individualised and generally comprise of a range of different activities to motivate and interest your child whilst helping them to achieve their goals. We also allow time for discussion with parents, carers, teachers to review goals, strategies, progress and homework activities.

Training programs assist parents and teachers in furthering their knowledge about speech and language development. Programs can cater to any number of parents/teachers and can be held during work hours or after work hours.

  • No, you can simply make a booking to see one of our therapists. However, if your child is under the care of more than one health professional, it is often beneficial for their primary health carer to provide us with a formal referral as this can provide additional information on your child’s development which can then be used to help support your child’s speech and language needs.

  • An initial assessment typically involves talking to a parent/caregiver to gather background information about the child, observing the child in his/her natural environment, completing a range of formal/informal assessments, and enjoying some play based activities. The activities and assessments conducted will vary depending on the child’s needs.

  • We ask that you complete a client questionnaire prior to an initial appointment - you will receive a copy of this attached to your initial confirmation email. If you have any documents/reports from other professionals/teachers, these are handy to have available as well.

  • Therapy sessions are unique and individualised to each child, depending on the child’s needs. Generally therapy sessions comprise of a range of different activities to motivate and interest your child whilst helping them to achieve their individual goals.
